Montagu Grain Mills: The Meulplaas Mill

Sep 3, 2019Engineering

According to the book Water ~ mills windmills and horse ~ mills of South Africa written by James Walton (page 198) Montagu had four grain mills. Unfortunately none of the Montagu mills featured in his book. He only visited Montagu after his book was published. On visiting the farm Meulplaas which was the location of one of Montagu’s three water mills at the time he stated that its timber construction was unique and not seen by him before. He was extremely disappointed that the Montagu water mills had not featured in his book.

The second water mill was reported by Irma Jordaan a local resident living on the farm Bourdeaux. This mill being situated at Bo-Kruis – ancestral home of the Jordaan family.

The third water mill was at Badskloof (Donkerkloof) and was washed away by the 1981 floods. See picture later on in this article.

The Marais Mill which has been so named as the Marais family were one time owners of the mill and a contribution has been received from a member of the Marais family which will give the viewer a wonderful insight to this mill in its heyday.

In his book Soos die dorp was vanaf my kinderdae Tokkie Bussell talks about a coal fired mill started by Mr. Ernst Brink but at this stage no further information has come to light. The Brink Bros. were prominent business men in Montagu at one time and there is a strong possibility that they operated this mill for their customers.

Historian and Montagu resident Blackie Badenhorst stated that she believes another mill existed at 3 Rawson Street. At this stage no further information on this site has come to light.
